    Enemy Mine (film)

By late in the 21st century, the nations of the Earth were finally at peace, working together to explore and colonize the distant reaches of space. Unfortunately, we weren’t alone out there. A race of non-human aliens called the Dracs were claiming squatters’ rights to some of the richest star systems in the galaxy. Well, they weren’t going to get it

This is the introductory narrative of  Enemigo Mio. Suppose will follow after:

They’re not going to get, because we will fight until the last soldier to destroy them, remove them, and so on.

This is a typical anti-war film of the decade of 80, as shown in an interesting way the meaninglessness of many wars. A few days ago I remembered his existence and taking the time to go check on the shelf video stores looking for old movies (old old) until I could find and see again.

It has often been the paradoxes, fables, fantasy and science fiction are excellent tools for social critique, because it is much easier for people to understand and accept social criticism when the society portraited is not the same in which they live. For example, in enemy mine, the villain that had to overcome was a horrible reptilian extraterrestrial (extraterrestrial rather than we could put any other race, creed, political beliefs different from ours), portrayed to perfection the period of time which the movie which was filmed (the height of the Cold War).

The film is the truth about the encounter of two living beings (two minds, two cultures) who are forced to survive together and overcome their ideological differences (which are the strongest they can be). And leave behind after they realize that perhaps after all not so different.

The film first have a good pace, the ending is perhaps a little sentimental but by the time of the film is very good. The truth I like the way these two intelligences realize they are not so different, both are alone and afraid. And in the end prevails the need to survive. Maybe you can relate to movies that are not science fiction as it is Letters from Iwo Jima from Clint Eastwood,

    Letters from Iwo Jima

where Japanese soldiers get a US marine and after his dead, they read a letter from his mother, and realize that he was similar like them, a son, a father, a brother more, not an alien… This shows how absurd it’s that two people (minds) are intended to kill each other as unknown, because the irony is when they know each other most likely would not have any intention of killing, showing how strong he can be and as Xenophobia those times affected us (I have often thought that still exists, now there are not Aliens or the Communist, but now other things are still there, not it?)

    How find it?

A 1985 movie based in the book Enemy Mine of Barry B. Longyear (1979), with Dennis Quaid as the human soldier (Someone could said “The good”) and Louis Gossett Jr as the Drac Soldier  (“The evil alien”).

The truth this is a good movie that deserve to be watched again…
